اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ

Durood · Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ

A gathering of authentic salutations upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — each with its Arabic, transliteration, meaning and the exact hadith source. Allah says:

"Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace." — Qur'an 33:56

Durood 1

Durood-e-Ibrahim (The Complete Salawat)

Sahih (Agreed upon)

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ. اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ.

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd. Allāhumma bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd.

Meaning

O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent prayers upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

The Prophet ﷺ taught this when the Companions asked how to send salawat upon him. This is the Durood recited in every prayer's tashahhud.

Durood 2

Short Salawat

Qur'anic command

صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ

Ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam

Meaning

May Allah send prayers and peace upon him.

The everyday salawat said upon hearing the Prophet's ﷺ name, rooted in Allah's command: 'Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace.'

Durood 3

Durood upon the Prophet, his wives and progeny

Sahih (Agreed upon)

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ.

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā azwājihi wa dhurriyyatih, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, wa bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā azwājihi wa dhurriyyatih, kamā bārakta ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, innaka Ḥamīdun Majīd.

Meaning

O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad and upon his wives and offspring, as You sent prayers upon the family of Ibrahim; and bless Muhammad and his wives and offspring, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Indeed You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.

Durood 4

Durood of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri

Sahih

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ.

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammadin ʿabdika wa rasūlik, kamā ṣallayta ʿalā āli Ibrāhīm, wa bārik ʿalā Muḥammadin wa ʿalā āli Muḥammad, kamā bārakta ʿalā Ibrāhīma wa āli Ibrāhīm.

Meaning

O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad Your servant and messenger, as You sent prayers upon the family of Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim.

Durood 5

The Salawat that reaches the Prophet ﷺ

Sahih (authenticated by al-Albani)

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَلَائِكَةً سَيَّاحِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ يُبَلِّغُونِي مِنْ أُمَّتِي السَّلَامَ.

Inna lillāhi malā'ikatan sayyāḥīna fī al-arḍi yuballighūnī min ummatī as-salām.

Meaning

Indeed Allah has angels who travel about the earth conveying to me the salutations of my Ummah.

A reminder that every salawat you send is personally delivered to the Prophet ﷺ.

Durood 6

Reward of one salawat

Sahih

مَنْ صَلَّىٰ عَلَيَّ صَلَاةً وَاحِدَةً، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ بِهَا عَشْرًا.

Man ṣallā ʿalayya ṣalātan wāḥidatan, ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi bihā ʿashran.

Meaning

Whoever sends one salawat upon me, Allah will send ten upon him in return.

Durood 7

Durood after the Adhan (the intercession promise)

Sahih

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَٰذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ، آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ، وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ.

Allāhumma Rabba hādhihi ad-daʿwati at-tāmmah, waṣ-ṣalātil-qā'imah, āti Muḥammadan al-wasīlata wal-faḍīlah, wabʿathhu maqāman maḥmūdan alladhī waʿadtah.

Meaning

O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad al-Wasilah (the highest station in Paradise) and virtue, and raise him to the praised station which You have promised him.

Whoever says this after hearing the adhan, the Prophet's ﷺ intercession becomes permissible for him on the Day of Judgement.

Durood 8

The Miserly Man (encouragement to say salawat)

Hasan Sahih

الْبَخِيلُ مَنْ ذُكِرْتُ عِنْدَهُ فَلَمْ يُصَلِّ عَلَيَّ.

Al-bakhīlu man dhukirtu ʿindahu falam yuṣalli ʿalayya.

Meaning

The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned, and he does not send salawat upon me.

Durood 9

Salawat on Friday

Sahih (authenticated by al-Albani)

إِنَّ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ أَيَّامِكُمْ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ… فَأَكْثِرُوا عَلَيَّ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ فِيهِ، فَإِنَّ صَلَاتَكُمْ مَعْرُوضَةٌ عَلَيَّ.

Inna min afḍali ayyāmikum yawmal-jumuʿah… fa akthirū ʿalayya min aṣ-ṣalāti fīh, fa inna ṣalātakum maʿrūḍatun ʿalayya.

Meaning

The best of your days is Friday… so send abundant salawat upon me on it, for your salawat is presented to me.
