Tafsir

Tafsir explains the intended meanings of Qur'anic language using the Qur'an itself, the Sunnah, Companion explanations, Arabic, context, and disciplined scholarship. Tadabbur is personal reflection guided by those meanings, not invention of new doctrine.

Translation is interpretation and cannot carry every shade of the Arabic. Reading several reliable translations can expose where explanation is involved.

The Qur'an was revealed over about twenty-three years, memorized and written in the Prophet's lifetime, gathered under Abu Bakr, and standardized in written copies under ʿUthman with Companion consensus.

Its present order is not chronological. Surahs and passages speak across contexts, and understanding their placement can reveal thematic relationships.

Makkan passages often emphasize tawhid, resurrection, prophets, moral awakening, and the challenge of revelation. Madinan passages build community law, family and economic duties, interfaith relations, and public ethics, though neither period is limited to one theme.

Knowing period and audience can clarify tone and purpose. Claims about exact occasions require reliable reports.

Tafsir studies vocabulary, grammar, morphology, ellipsis, emphasis, metaphor, oath, parable, sound, and shifts in person or tense. A root can connect meanings without making every derivative interchangeable.

The Qur'an addresses seventh-century Arabic hearers yet guides beyond them. Literary beauty supports meaning; it is not decorative excess.

Asbab al-nuzul reports explain why some verses were revealed, but the wording may apply beyond the initial event. Weak stories cannot control a clear verse.

Nazm and munasabah study coherence within passages and between surahs. Context includes nearby verses, the surah's argument, the Qur'an as a whole, and the Prophetic application.

Scholars distinguish clear and ambiguous texts, general and specific wording, unrestricted and qualified expressions, literal and figurative usage, commands and recommendations, and verses whose legal application developed over time.

Abrogation is a technical claim requiring strong evidence; it should not be used casually whenever two verses seem difficult to reconcile.

Tafsir bi'l-ma'thur prioritizes explanation by other verses, Prophetic hadith, Companions, and early successors. Al-Tabari is a monumental example, recording chains and weighing language and reports.

A report appearing in a tafsir is not automatically authentic. Hadith criticism, variant reports, and the author's method remain relevant.

Exegetes developed complementary emphases: legal rulings, grammar and rhetoric, theology, spiritual formation, philosophical questions, and social reform. Al-Qurtubi, al-Zamakhshari, al-Razi, Ibn Kathir, al-Baydawi, Abu Hayyan, Ibn ʿAshur, and others illustrate this range.

Insight is accepted when anchored to Arabic and revelation; interpretations that cancel the apparent guidance or claim secret certainty without proof are treated cautiously.

Al-Fatihah gathers praise, worship, dependence, and the prayer for guidance. Al-Baqarah through al-Ma'idah develop covenant, worship, law, community memory, family, justice, food, pilgrimage, and relations with earlier communities.

Al-Anfal and al-Tawbah address conflict, treaties, loyalty, hypocrisy, and communal responsibility. Al-Tawbah uniquely begins without the written basmalah in the canonical muṣḥaf.

Yunus through al-Nahl call to revelation, gratitude, and patient trust. Al-Isra and al-Kahf explore moral responsibility, knowledge, power, wealth, and trial. Maryam through al-Anbiya gather prophetic mercy and resurrection.

Al-Shuʿara through Ya-Sin repeatedly stage the encounter between messengers and resistant societies, while al-Saffat and Sad deepen prophetic portraits.

Al-Hujurat establishes social ethics; Qaf through al-Hadid intensify resurrection and accountability; al-Mujadilah through al-Tahrim address community, family, loyalty, and hypocrisy.

Al-Mulk through al-Mursalat awaken awe and judgment. The shorter surahs compress creed, history, worship, generosity, and refuge into language suited to prayer and memorization.

Begin with recitation and a reliable translation. Identify the surah's period, central aim, sections, repeated words, speakers, transitions, and links between opening and ending. Then consult at least one accessible and one detailed tafsir.

Record what the text establishes, what scholars infer, where they differ, and one action or prayer. Return repeatedly: completion is not finishing commentary once but growing in guidance across a lifetime.
